Todd Antony

about the artwork
'Climbing Cholitas', the Aymara indigenous women who are breaking stereotypes The women depicted in this series by photographer Todd Antony are the ‘Climbing Cholitas’ or ‘Cholitas Escaladoras Bolivianas’ – a group of Aymara indigenous women who are breaking stereotypes and shifting perceptions. In January 2019, they summited the 22,841ft peak of Mt Aconcagua, the highest mountain outside of Asia. And did so eschewing traditional climbing clothing in favour of their traditional, vibrant, billowing dresses, and using their traditional shawls to carry equipment rather than backpacks. The word 'Cholita' has previously been used as a pejorative term for the indigenous Aymara women of Bolivia. But these women are reclaiming it as a badge of honour. "In the very recent past, as little as 10 years ago, Bolivia’s indigenous Aymara women were socially ostracised and systematically marginalised," explains Todd. "Known as 'Cholitas', these women, easily identified by their wide skirts, braided hair and bowler hats, suffered racial discrimination and could be refused entry to certain restaurants, using public transport and entering certain public spaces such as the capitals central square, Plaza Murillo. "While they have been advocating for their rights since at least the 1960s, their movement was further invigorated by the 2005 election of Evo Morales," he continues. "Bolivia’s first Amerindian president. Since then the majority indigenous population have seen greater recognition and autonomy."

Making Pictures

about
Whether working in a studio or out on location, Paul Calver captures authentic moments and creates crisp, distinctive images that linger long in the memory.  Born in Suffolk, Paul’s first love was skating, but in 2002 he dislocated his knee on a trip to Germany, picked up a camera instead and hasn’t looked back.  He is well-known for his beautifully shot sports photography, whether it’s runners snaking through snowy mountains or surfers riding waves off the west coast of India. Personal projects push the parameters of his work and these experiments feed back into commissions for brand giants like Nike and Adidas. But there is much more to Paul’s portfolio than sports imagery and he is adept at shooting atmospheric real life reportage and documentary projects too. Recent series capturing intimate family moments form strong narratives and deeply personal moments.

dougie wallace

about
Dougie Wallace is internationally recognised for his long-term social documentary projects and a distinct direct style of expressive street photography. He has won prestigious awards, exhibited as a solo artist or in joint exhibits in world-renowned institutions and photographic festivals, authored a number of books, all critically acclaimed. London-based, his assignments and personal work take him around the world.

To coincide with BBC Season of Photography, in March 2017, BBC4 broadcast a 30-minute programme about Dougie, as part of the What Artists Do All Day.  series, providing insights into the lives of outstanding artists. The programme follows Dougie on the streets of Knightsbridge, as he completes the photographs for the book Harrodsburg. Available here to watch.

More recently, Dougie was commissioned by Sky Art 50 to create a series of portraits of dogs and their owners with the focus on the dog, as a prognosis of the British public at large in the light of the EU referendum, which was showcased at The BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art and the Barbican and on Sky Arts Channel broadcast on the night of the original leaving date.
Dougie attributes his unique vision to his Glasgow up-bring and experiences lived or perceptively witnessed over two decades of residing in east London, from the uninhibited party days, when the area was a cultural wasteland through to its on-going urban regeneration, turning this district into a fashionable destination and tourist Mecca.

'Living in Shoreditch has helped me develop an eye for the tragi-comic, messy side of uninhibited human behaviour. My Glasgow upbringing has shaped my style, which has been described as 'visually exaggerated' and 'hard-edged'.

'What motivates my pictures is human behaviour. People’s interactions and emotions fascinate me. My stories are thematic. They have similarities of expressions running through them. My work is informed by societies’ trends and incongruities and translating what I see into wit, criticism and humorous vignettes. I’d like to think that my photos convey a point of view that believable and absurd.'
This idiosyncratic point of view comes to life in his books, which have all equally generated critical attention and viral buzz. His books Stags, Hens and Bunnies, A Blackpool Story (Dewi Lewis Media, 2014) and Shoreditch Wild Life (Hoxton Mini Press, 2014), each a distinctive spin on hedonism and excess, turned Dougie into a household name among taste-makers. Road Wallah (Dewi Lewis, 2016), which offers a unique insight into the world of Bombay cab drivers has been exhibited at numerous photo festivals and gallery shows and was short-listed for 2015 European Book Publisher’s Award. Followed Harrodsburg, which won the inaugural 'Magnum Photography Award 2016'. Well Heeled (Dewi Lewis, 2017) is an observation about the cultural shift among dog owners (Dewi Lewis, 2017). Goan to the dogs is to be published by (Dewi Lewis, 2020).  East Ended is a reflection on gentrification and its the ambiguous and fraught relationship with street art and local communities. Recently published by (Dewi Lewis).

Dougie is sought after for opinion, project assignments, editorial features and ad-hoc opportunities. His work has been featured in assignments and publications for magazines and newspapers, including, The Sunday Times Magazine, D Repubblica, The Economist, Le Monde, The New Yorker, Stern, The Guardian, NYTimes, The Independent, International New York Times, Observer, GQ, Dazed, Hunger, Vice, BBC, CNN, Itsnicethat, Marie Claire, Die Zeit, Süddeutsche Zeitung, El País, Der Spiegel, Macleans, NZZ, Die Tageszeitung, Neon, dS Magazine - De Standaard. As well as numerous photography magazines, BJP, GUP, Amateur Photographer, Professional Photographer, F2, Fotografia Magazine, Lens Culture, Leica LFI, L’Oeil, Fotomagazine, European Photography and Photo International.
Dougie continues to shot fashion for the likes of Tatler, ES Magazine and Dazed.

about the artwork
'EASTENDED' REFLECTS ON GENTRIFICATION AND HOW THIS PROCESS TRIGGERS AN AMBIGUOUS AND OFTEN FRAUGHT RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN FREELY EXPRESSED STREET ART AND COMMERCE, PUBLIC SPACE AND BILLBOARD, LOCAL COMMUNITY AND GLOBAL CAPITAL.   THE TRANSFORMATION OF LONDON’S EAST END FROM URBAN DECAY TO FASHIONABLE IS THE ULTIMATE EXAMPLE OF THE POWER OF STREET ART TO REGENERATE A NEIGHBOURHOOD TO MAKE IT ATTRACTIVE TO THE EMERGING CREATIVE CLASS.   BEFORE IT BECAME A RECOGNISED ART FORM, STREET ART WAS CALLED GRAFFITI, A SIGN OF DECAY THAT LOWERED PROPERTY VALUES. FAST FORWARD TO THE TRANSFORMATION OF LONDON’S EAST END AND IT BECAME COOL. SEEN AS ‘GRITY’ AND ‘EDGY’, STREET ART GENERATES INTEREST IN AN AREA. REFASHIONED, AND MADE ACCEPTABLE, IT TRANSFORMS PUBLIC SPACE AS AREAS BECOME HIGH-PRICED, TRENDY AND DESIRABLE. ITS ‘EDGE’ AND SENSE OF ‘AUTHENTICITY’ BECOME A MEANS TO SPEED UP THE GENTRIFICATION PROCESS. BUT AS PROPERTY PRICES RISE, THE COST OF LIVING FORCES OUT BOTH THOSE ARTISTS, WHO CREATED THE ART, AS WELL AS THE LOCAL RESIDENTS, WHO CAN NO LONGER AFFORD TO LIVE THERE. NEVER WAS THIS TRUER THAN IN SHOREDITCH, WHERE THESE IMAGES WERE SHOT– BRICK LANE, REDCHURCH STREET AND SCALTER STREET – AN OPEN-AIR CASE OF URBAN ART, GENERATING CONSIDERABLE TOURISM.   ONCE CONSIDERED AS SPRAY-PAINTED VANDALISM, GRAFFITI NOW APPEARS IN GALLERIES AND MUSEUMS WORLDWIDE. ARTISTS, WHO WERE HOODED, HIDDEN AND NOCTURNAL, ARE OUT IN THE OPEN, PRODUCING THEIR WORK IN BROAD DAYLIGHT FROM CHERRY-PICKER PLATFORMS. COMMISSIONED BY CORPORATE BRANDS, SUCH AS ADIDAS AND GUCCI, THEY OFFER CREATIVE INTERVENTIONS INTO THE URBAN LANDSCAPE, IMAGES OF COOLNESS AND AFFLUENCE – MURALS DESTINED TO BECOME INSTRAGRAMMABLE PROPAGANDA. YOU SEE EVERY CODE OF COOL FASHION AND ATTITUDE, ALONGSIDE SCENES OF POVERTY AND PEOPLE TRADING ON THE STREETS IN ANYTHING BUT THE COOL. GENTRIFICATION HAS BROUGHT NUMBING SAMENESS, YET LOOK CAREFULLY AND YOU’LL SPOT THE CHEEKY PROTEST POSTERS – POLITICAL CRITIQUE TO CLIMATE CHANGE REBELLION – PURPOSEFULLY PLASTERED OVER AND DEFACING THE ADS, AS IF THE VOICE OF THE STREETS IS RECLAIMING ITS WALLS.   WHILE THIS MAY SOUND LIKE A FAMILIAR TUNE OF THE CYCLIC PROCESS OF PROPERTY DECLINE AND REBIRTH, WHAT MAKES THIS PROJECT TIMELY IS THE BACKDROP OF THE UK HOUSING CRISIS, WHICH HAS REACHED A CRITICAL POINT. IN A SUBTLE NOD, GLOSSY REPRESENTATIONS OF AFFLUENCE ARE UNDERCOATED WITH HUMAN STORIES, THUS GIVING VOICE TO THE UNHEARD: THE FORGOTTEN LOCAL RESIDENTS, ON THE ONE HAND, AND THE EMERGING GRASSROOTS RESISTANCE, ON THE OTHER. EACH DETAIL PERCEPTIVELY CAPTURED BY THE CAMERA CAN BE INTERPRETED BOTH AS AN ART FORM AND A CALL TO ARMS.

NARÈNTE // Lucio Aru + Franco Erre

about
NARÈNTE is a visual language molded by indestructible roots, natural frontiers and desire of evolution.
We created a virtual bridge between an island in the middle of Mediterrenean Sea, Sardegna, and the most contemporary metropolitan city in Europe, Berlin. We listen, very carefully, the sound of our island and we bring it elsewhere, in a place where, eventually, it mixes up with multiple urban entities and where it has to become image in order to be universally perceived.

NARÈNTE is a duo as well as the connection point of many different paths told as they were part of the same reality.

NARÈNTE is the story teller who translates to content, it's a creative will.

about the artwork

Bernd Opitz

about
Having gained experience shooting mostly artist´s portraits
for the music press, Bernd started his career as a
photographer at the age of 22. He started to explore the
field of still photography soon after, in which he worked
successfully for some years before feeling the urge to
strive for new borders. Interior and architectural
photography seemed just as challenging as a new vital
approach to people photography, and since he never was one
to fear the battle, he just went for both. Fortunately the
industry saw his often unconventional results in frequent
publishings – and liked it. Today after a good thirty years of
peak performance already, Bernd holds the respect of many
an art critic and numerous clients, who trust his great
creativity, his fast grasp of every subject, his unbeatable
humour, his precise eye and his extremely sensible balance of
light and media. „The light is your friend – you have to treat
it kindly and give it room to breathe“, he often says. „It will
reward you then.“
His work takes him from the most secluded and breathtaking
spots to rural and suburban environments all over the
world, he constantly seems to be living out of suitcases. He
loves it. Just as much as he enjoys the next challenge that
awaits him with every new assignment.
Movement is everything.

about
Photography has always been an important part of my life. I fell in love with it as a teen, playing around with my dads analogue SLR camera and already started working as a photographer whilst going to school.

I love controlling light, regardless wether it’s about the flashlights in the studio or the available light on location.
I don’t like the “let’s fix it in postproduction”-mentality that is unfortunately common in business these days. For me the raw photo should already look like being ready for usage. If that’s ensured, the results after retouching and color-correction are even greater!

Within the last years I’ve been able to win the trust of great clients and agencies and I’m still approaching every opportunity to take images with the same passion as my very first assignment. It’s the craft of creating that always drives me.

about the artwork
SKI FOR FREEDOM  This project is a documentation of an interesting joint venture between two NGOs in Austria and Pakistan.  The idea is to collect used ski equipment as donations in Austria, ship it to Pakistan and bring mountain guides from Austria and Pakistan together to educate a wild mix of children from all over Pakistan in mountain knowledge and skiing. While the main idea is to teach skiing, the fundamental philisophy behind it is bringing children together, make them have an experience they would never have otherwise and connect individuals from different religions and parts of the country. In this project boys and girls are allowed to experience everthing together, which is a rare sight in the stronly religius parts of northern Pakistan, up in the Karakoram mountains where the ski camp is situated.  After travelling gruelling roads for days up north from Islamabad and gathering everybody and the Equipment in Shimshal, a quiet mountain village known for its strong high altitude workers, everybody was handed a heavy load of gear to shoulder and the group ventures off into the mountains in search of snow. Equipment, food and shelter were all carried by the group into higher altitudes because road access does not exist in this fairly undeveloped and rugged, yet extremely beautiful area of the country.  Base camp was set at over 4000m of altitude with temperatures rarely rising above 0 degrees during daytime and often droppping below minus 20 degrees celcius by night. Everybody was sleeping in tents and although there was no infrastructure and every run down the snow was to be well earned by waling up first, spirtis were high and the two week trip resulted in many lessons learned for everybody, friendships formed and adventures had.
